Teaching the French Revolution

Friday, January 30, 2015, 9am—2:30pm
Jennifer Jones, Associate Professor, Department of History, Rutgers

Two broad questions dominate scholarship on the French Revolution: What were the causes of Revolution? And why did the Revolution so quickly descend into the violence of the Terror in 1792?  In the wake of the terrorist violence of 9/11, the global impact of the American economic collapse of Fall 2008, and the revolutionary movements of the Arab Spring, historians have returned to the study of the causes and consequences of the French Revolution with fresh approaches. In this workshop we will explore these new approaches to the French Revolution, particularly the intersection of local and global causes of the Revolution and the assignment of responsibility for the Terror to individuals (like Robespierre), institutions (like the Committee of Public Safety), and/or ideologies (like Jacobin Republicanism).
