RESEARCH INTERESTS

My current manuscript-in progress explores the spatial, historical, and symbolic confinement enslaved women experienced in two eighteenth-century British Atlantic port cities: Bridgetown, Barbados and Charleston, South Carolina.  Grounded in archival research and recent scholarship on gender and enslavement, I am interested understanding how the construction of legal, architectural and historical “spaces” marked enslaved women’s bodies and experiences, in life and death.  My work brings together critical historiography, historical geography, anthropology and black feminist theory in my analyses of enslaved women in the urban Atlantic.  My broad research interests include post-colonial theory and analyses of sexuality and gender in the early Black Atlantic World.
