Approaches to Teaching about War in American Society

Thursday, April 23, 2015, 9am—2:30pm
Jonathan Lurie, Professor Emeritus, Department of History, Rutgers-Newark
Maxine Lurie, Professor Emerita, Department of History, Seton Hall University

War has been an important and significant part of American history from colonial times to the present; in fact virtually every generation has lived through at least one such event. Yet most teachers and their students have not personally experienced war.  This workshop will explore topics and materials for use in teaching about war including some of the different ways historians have explored it: focusing on those who emphasize big topics such as cause and effect vs. those who write about specific battles (new military history vs. old);  Native American vs. colonists’ perspectives/purposes/methods in waging war; military vs. civilian perspectives; the use of extreme violence and resulting "atrocities"; war crimes; war and memory;  as well as war in literature and film.
