A special seminar with Susan Neiman

Friday, March 24, 2023: 11 am--1:00 pm

“Defending Universalism:  Repairing the Past with Susan Neiman”

Susan Neiman will revisit her 2019 monograph, Learning from the Germans: Race and the Memory of Evil (Farrar, Straus and Giroux). The book is an absorbing reflection by a Jewish American philosopher who has lived in Berlin for much of her life, on American attempts to come to terms with the legacy of slavery in light of how Germans have sought to overcome their past. Together with us, Susan Neiman will discuss what constitutes our responsibility to our national pasts, what we can learn from studying other nations’ reckonings with their violent history, and how working off the past can prepare the ground for freer futures.

In-person, pre-read book & discussion— please read Susan Neiman, Learning from the Germans: Race and the Memory of Evil (2019) ahead of the seminar meeting
