Depending on your role at Rutgers, you may be set up with accounts for various services at the University.  Some accounts may be used to access services on many systems, such as the NetID, while others may have a more discrete purpose.  At times, mutiple names may be used to describe the same account.

A Novell account and History account both refer to departmental services provided by the SAS Information Technology Office.  A NetID and RCI / Eden account both refer to separate services provided to all Rutgers faculty, staff, and students on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus.

Novell - History

The SAS Information Technology Office provides services on a department level to many academic departments on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus.  The most common services include desktop computer management and support, network file storage and backup, file sharing, printer sharing, network-hosted applications, and departmental email and related services.

The Novell History account may alternatively be referred to as a History account, a Novell account, an SAS account, or an SAS Novell account.  These all refer to a user account on the Novell system managed by the SAS IT Office.  This user account can be granted rights to log in to most or all computers in the department, have space allocated on the network for file storage, and be granted further rights to other files, printers, and applications that are available to the department as network resources.

While optional, most users will also receive a departmental email address.  The email address is of the form [username]@[department].rutgers.edu, for example, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  This email account shares the same username and password as the afore-mentioned SAS Novell account.  Currently, the SAS IT Office provides email by utilizing the Zimbra Collaboration Suite, which features both email and calendaring solutions.

NetID - RCI / Eden

RCI (Research Computing Initiative) is a central computing system that the faculty and staff on Rutgers New Brunswick/Piscataway campus use for a variety of services, including email.  An account on one of the central computing systems, such as RCI, is necessary for the creation of a NetID.  In other words, the NetID refers to having an account on any of the central computing systems on any Rutgers campus.

A NetID is required for students, faculty, and staff, and is used to authenticate to many online services throughout Rutgers.  Guests and other individuals who are conducting University business and are directly associated with the University, but are not officially on the University's payroll, are still eligible to create a NetID and are strongly encouraged to do so.
