What role(s) exist for humanists, and scholars who practice the humanities, in environmental communication, stewardship, and activism? How can we be scholars in public life, beyond traditional academic work and outputs?

In this talk Heather Fenyk, Ph.D., AICP/PP, President and Founder of the New Brunswick-based Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership (LRWP), will consider these questions and provide examples of the interweaving of humanities approaches in the work of the non-profit LRWP. She will talk about the important role(s) of the humanities in communicating forces and dynamics like climate change and environmental degradation – forces that often exceed individual capacity for representation (or even comprehension). She will provide examples of humanities components of the LRWP’s outreach and advocacy portfolio, and speak to the important role of humanities, research, and activism in advancing the LRWP’s mission to 'cultivate a culture of science and stewardship.’
