Conference: "The Salon and the Senses in the Long Eighteenth Century"
April 2-3, 2020
I write to call your attention to an upcoming conference at Rutgers, "The Salon and the Senses in the Long Eighteenth Century," that I am co-organizing with Rebecca Cypess (Music, Mason Gross). The conference is designed around a set of immersive experiences that we hope will inspire educators (high school through college) to think about innovative ways to teach 18th-century history.
The conference, which is the culmination of our two-year Center for Cultural Analysis (CCA) working group on the salon, will take place on April 2-3, 2020.

In addition to several panels of academic papers, our conference will feature the following sessions:
- Interactive Workshop on 18th-century theater and acting led by Professor Christopher Cartmill, (Theater, Mason Gross). Thursday afternoon, April 2.
- Musical performance: In the Salon of Marianna Martines. The Raritan Players, a mesmerizing musical ensemble, will recreate the late eighteenth-century Viennese musical salon of Marianna Martines. Martines was a remarkable eighteenth-century woman who was a student of Franz Joseph Haydn and Nicolo Porpora, played keyboard duets with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and was a composer in her own right. Thursday evening, April 2
- Pop-up Parisian Salon, circa 1760. A participatory, immersive recreation of a French salon, circa 1760. Audience participation welcomed. Friday afternoon, April 3.
Please feel free to publicize to your colleagues and students at Rutgers and beyond.
