Abstract: Non-Jewish Germans born around 1968 increasingly see themselves as reliving the World War Two traumas their grandparents were not allowed to mourn – of Allied bombardments, forced migrations, and mass rapes. Here, they turn to the concept of transgenerational trauma. In his lecture, Jan Plamper presents a genealogy and critique of the concept, detailing how it has prepared the ground for the emergence of a “Psycho-Right,” a loose alliance between traditionally leftist psychotherapy milieux and the Neue Rechte (New Right).
Bio: Jan Plamper is Professor of History at the University of Limerick. A specialist in the history of emotions, sensory history, the history of migration, and Russian and European history, Plamper is the author of acclaimed monographs, including The History of Emotions: An Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2015), The Stalin Cult: A Study in the Alchemy of Power (Yale University Press, 2012), and a recent German-language monograph that will soon be available in English: Das neue Wir.
