Looking Anew: A Collaborative Workshop on Photographs, Nationalities, and Mobilities

April 4, 3:30-5:30pm, followed by dinnerRutgers Academic Building, Room 6051

The workshop will bring together faculty and students to talk about photographs as historical sources, works of art, and ethnographic encounters. The conversation brings together scholars who are experts in photographic analysis with others who are working with the medium for the first time. During the first half of the workshop, Professors Gürsel and Stephens will discuss the role of photographs in their current research projects, which respectively focus on the Armenian and South Asian diasporas. Their presentations will grapple with the use of photography as a method of state surveillance, national identification, and racial discrimination, and as a constantly evolving medium of self-making and family memory. Professor Zervigón, who leads the “Developing Room” project at the Rutgers Center for Cultural Analysis, will offer comments. During the second half of the workshop, participants will be invited to share a photograph from their own work and to “look anew” at these sources by collaboratively viewing and analyzing them with the group.

Dinner will be served after the event. To RSVP please visit The RSVP form also includes additional information about how to submit images for discussion during the "show-and-tell" portion of the workshop.
