“Purity’s Poisons: Some Consequences of Making Images Move”
Tuesday, November 8, 2022: 11 am--1:00 pm (hybrid)
This paper asks how we might account for the environmental legacy of a substance, nitrate motion picture film, after it is no longer being made. It does so primarily by addressing the environmental consequences not only of nitrate film’s manufacture, but the manufacture of its successor, safety film, so called because it was the “non-inflammable” alternative to nitrate film. Both substances were primarily made by the Eastman Kodak Company. I examine how Kodak harmed ecologies and bodies across its landscapes of manufacture, and how safety film production bequeathed on one region a legacy of making some of the most destructive substances to have ever been deployed in war.
