Rutgers British Studies Presents

A Lunchtime Conversation with Professor Susan Grayzel (Utah State Univ.):

“Understanding Modern War through Material Culture: Public History and the Making of an Object-Centered Digital Archive”

Monday, April 3, 2023, Noon to 1 pm

Room 6051, AB West

Lunch will be served. All are welcome. Graduate and Undergraduate Students Interested in Public and Digital History are particularly encouraged to attend!

With the aid of an NEH-Dialogues on the Experience of War grant, Prof. Grayzel has been co-directing the “Bringing War Home” Project at Utah State University. This project digitally collects objects carried to and from America’s modern wars alongside the “object stories” (oral histories) that connect these artifacts to the personal memories of veterans and of their family members. The project will then house materials in a publicly-accessible digital archive. In this lunchtime session, Grayzel will lead a discussion of the practices and findings of the project as well as highlight how putting material culture at the center of public and digital history can lead to new understandings of modern war.
