A Black Army. Negotiating race at Fort Huachuca (Arizona) during World War II

From 1941 to 1945, 2 infantry divisions were successively trained at Fort Huachuca, the only “black post” in the United States. The largest concentration of black soldiers ever, it evolved from strict segregation to experiments in racial integration that influenced the presidential decision to ban discrimination in the US army after the war.

Rutgers University welcomes Pauline Peretz is a historian at University Paris 8 (France), co-director of the Institut d’histoire du temps present. Her latest book is Une armée noire. Fort Huachuca, Arizona (1941-1945) and is forthcoming in English with Cambridge University Press.
