 Pinsky Anatoly February 23 2026

The Program in Russian and East European Languages and Literatures

present a talk with the University of Helsinki's Anatoly Pinsky on Monday, 2/23

 (Co-sponsored by the History Department)

"Did the Soviet People Support the Communist Party? The View from Soviet Literature"

What: This talk examines how a key literary genre—lyric verse—made demands on thoughts, feelings, and bodies to show Soviet citizens how they were expected to relate to the Communist Party. When viewed from the present-day, this topic provides us with a picture of political personhood that challenges our assumptions about modern citizenship, not only in contemporary Russia but in the broader world as well.

When: Monday, Feb. 23rd, 5:30pm

Where: AB West 4052, 4th Floor (Comp Lit Seminar Room)

Also: Light refreshments will be served

Anatoly Pinsky is a research fellow at the Aleksanteri Institute of the University of Helsinki who focuses on Russian, Ukrainian, and Jewish history. He previously worked at the European University at St. Petersburg, and his research explores the meaning of key concepts of Soviet history like “sincerity” (iskrennost’) and “consciousness” (soznatel’nost’).
