Marika is a PhD candidate at Rutgers after receiving a B.A. from Bard College and an M.A. from Brooklyn College. Marika studies what low-income New Yorkers did for fun, outdoors, during the long nineteenth century. Marika follows the city’s workers as they walked to public parks in their neighborhoods, took ferries and streetcars to beer gardens and pleasure grounds, and boarded steamboats headed to waterfront resorts beyond the city’s edge. At landscapes like these, urbanites sought pleasure as well as escape from the hazardous conditions of their home and work environments.
