History happens every day, and informs who we are as individuals, as citizens, and as members of the world community. The Department of History at Rutgers University – New Brunswick is dedicated to the close study and teaching of history from all periods and places. With over sixty members, the faculty boasts an international reputation for the quality of its scholarship, as evidenced by the many prestigious awards and fellowships earned by department members in recent years.

The undergraduate program offers a selection of courses that is unsurpassed by other major universities, and provides opportunities for study in areas ranging from Ancient China to contemporary America and specializing in topics such as oral history, public history, and media history.  An honors program is also available to qualifying students.

The graduate program (M.A. in Global and Comparative History, Ph.D. in multiple fields) is noted for its strengths both in traditional regional specialties (including the histories of the U.S., Europe, and Latin America) and in thematic, transnational, and comparative subfields. Students have access to a range of affiliated centers and projects, advancing opportunities for innovative scholarship and interdisciplinary research.
