Aries received her B.A. and M.A. in history from Northeast Normal University in China. Her research centers on the history of U.S.-East Asian relations in the 20th century, with a special interest in war memories, perceptions, and propaganda. Her dissertation explores how Americans and the Chinese (in mainland China and Taiwan) have recalled the U.S. World War II military presence in China and U.S.-China wartime military cooperation, and how such memories have interacted with politics, international relations, and identity formation.
