Graduate Student Bios

Cherene is a PhD candidate specializing in the history of the Arabian Gulf. Her dissertation project, titled "Developing the Counterrevolution: British Oman in the 20th Century," traces how the transformation of labor, land, infrastructure, maritime transport and communication technology in Oman in the 20th century was determined by counterrevolutionary pressures. Her research looks at these sites as spaces of contestation where soon-to-be subjects of the Sultanate contributed to, resisted or were co-opted by the empire's developmentalist project. She holds a combined BA/MA in Development Studies from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
